Wild is the Wind

This is a song that I’ve performed live in concerts past, and like many of my songs I never posted a recording of it. Wild is the Wind is a beautiful jazz standard written for the 1957 film of the same name and was originally recorded by Johnny Mathis. The first time I heard this song was from George Michael’s nostalgic album Songs From The Last Century. I immediately fell in love with the song and wanted to create my own arrangement.

A day of in-depth research brought me to other covered versions by brilliant artists like Nina Simone and David Bowie. Their renditions are very different in style but helped serve as a template for creating my own. The lush jazz chords and haunting poetic lyrics drive the song to its romantic climax, yet I felt there was something more that needed to found within the song. I started having trouble right off the bat. I got lost and couldn’t find the right rhythm. Hitting a musical dead end, I decided to take a cue from nature. Just a short walk from my home is a park that I love to visit and listen to nature’s symphony. I sat for an afternoon and meditated on what I thought the song would sound like if it were orchestrated by Mother Nature herself. A sweeping breeze passing through the trees and collecting leaves off the ground on its way out. It was there that I discovered the tempo and phrasing needed to make this arrangement come to life.

Enjoy xo
